DIRECTOR, TALENT JOIN MAVERICK AND ANGEL BABY'S SLAMDANCE HORROR SCREENPLAY WINNER "SLAUGHTER"
Beverly Hills, CA October, 2007 - Maverick's Mark Morgan and Angel Baby Entertainment's Gregory Segal jointly announce that Victor Garcia, who recently helmed Return to House on Haunted Hill for Dark Castle and Warner Brothers, and the online serial 30 Days of Night: Blood Trails for Sam Raimi and Ghost House, is set to direct the first Slamdance Horror Screenplay Competition Winner, Slaughter, from the script from Nathan Brookes and Bobby Lee Darby. Under the terms of the competition, Maverick Films and Angel Baby Entertainment annually finance and co-produce, in association with Slamdance, a feature film based on each year's prize-winning entry.
Principle Photography for the film begins October 15th, in Los Angeles. Additionally, Maverick and Angel Baby announce that Dominique Swain (Lolita, Face Off) has joined the cast of Slaughter.
Maverick Red, the genre specific subsidiary of Maverick Films, inked the deal with Angel Baby Entertainment and The Slamdance Film Festival. The deal calls for Maverick Red, and Angel Baby, to finance and co-produce three films over a three year period. The films will be the winning screenplays of the annual Slamdance Horror Screenplay Competition. Each film's World Premiere will take place as a special presentation during the next year's Slamdance Film Festival. Maverick also has Angel Baby Entertainment project, Digger, to be directed by Angel Baby partner John Andrew Gallagher, in pre-production for a fall shoot. Previous Slamdance-winning Competition screenplays have included Joshua Marston's Maria Full of Grace and Nicole Kassell and Stephen Fetcher's The Woodsman. The festival has succeeded in providing an opportunity for emerging first-time writers and directors to receive industry attention. Among others, the Festival essentially launched the careers of Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster and Jared Hess.
Maverick's Guy Oseary, Mark Morgan and Eric Thompson will produce each prize-winning entry culled from the newly-created Slamdance Horror Screenplay Competition, alongside Angel Baby Entertainment's partners Gregory Segal and John Andrew Gallagher. Maverick's Cheri Wozniak executive produces. The Slamdance Horror Screenplay Competition is overseen by Slamdance's John Stoddard and Slamdance President Peter Baxter, who also produces.
Maverick is currently in production on Bumper, starring Laura Breckenridge (Amusement, Havoc) for MGM; and is in pre-production on The Stepfather for Sony Pictures/Screen Gems with Nelson McCormick (Prom Night, also for Screen Gems) directing; and Twilight for Summit Entertainment with Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Lords of Dogtown) directing. Other pictures for Maverick include Fired Up for PictureHouse, the serial-killer thriller Labyrinth, for Summit Entertainment, starring Hilary Swank and The Stanford Prison Experiment, to be directed by Chris McQuarrie. The company is currently in post-production on the remake of the Korean box-office hit My Sassy Girl with Vertigo and Gold Circle Films.
A partnership between Producer Gregory Segal and Writer/Director/Producer John Andrew Gallagher (The Deli, Blue Moon), Angel Baby Entertainment has produced six features and two short films over the past three years, and has numerous projects in development. Segal's most recent credits include Vanessa William's starrer, My Brother, from Code Black and Universal, and as production executive, ThinkFilm's just released The Ten, directed by David Wain and starring Jessica Alba, Paul Rudd, Winona Ryder, Famke Jansen, Gretchen Mol, Oliver Platt, Ron Silver, Liev Schrieber, Rob Corddry, Justin Theroux and Adam Brody.
