"What surprised me most about the 2009 Horror Competition, was the entrants ability to provide a fresh take to just about every sub-genre of Horror imaginable. Sure, there were slasher movies, monster movies, psycological thrillers, and hauntings. But, our comepetitor's were able to lend each category something totally original, while still honoring the conventions and inconograpy inherent to the genre. Our winner, Brian La Rosa, put a brand new spin on the Werewolf mythology, by seemlessly integrating elements of other genres to create a dynamic Horror franchise in the making" says Slamdance Competition manager Brendan Casey.

The success of the Slamdance Screenplay Competition over the past fourteen years and the writers it has discovered continues to attract the attention of industry searching for the best new independent writing talent. Slamdance received over 2,500 submissions for its 2009 Screenplay Competitions, which strives to bring attention to the most talented emerging screenwriters and introduce them to the industry. Previous Competition-winning screenplays that were acquired for production include Nicole Kassell and Stephen Fetcher's The Woodsman, Joshua Marston's Maria Full of Grace and Tim Boughn's Neo Ned and most recently Drool written and directed by Nancy Kissam and executive produced by Slamdance. 2009 Slamdance Screenplay Competition Friends and Sponsors included Lonely Seal Releasing, Norm Lear's Act III Communications, Lonely Seal Releasing, Upload Films, Final Draft, InkTip and Script Magazine.

Slamdance has recently launched the 2010 Screenplay Competition that offers $12,000 in cash prizes, in addition to sponsored prizes. For the first time, the organization has combined its dramatic Feature, Short, Horror, Teleplay and Script Accessible categories into one competition taking place through July 30th. The longer Competition period takes into account increased submissions and the demand for Slamdance's economically priced coverage services.

As a year-round organization, Slamdance serves as a showcase for the discovery of new and emerging talent and is dedicated to the nurturing and development of new independent artists and their cinematic vision.  Slamdance lives by its mantra: "By Filmmakers, For Filmmakers."  No other festival is fully programmed by filmmakers. Slamdance counts among its alumni many notable writers and directors who first gained notice at the festival, including Christopher Nolan, Marc Forster and Jared Hess. Oren Peli's Paranormal Activity originally acquired from Slamdance has since grossed over $100 million at the Box Office and become Paramount's most profitable film ever. New filmmakers and writers today realize Slamdance is a great place to launch their careers.
